Kirkpatrick Biography
Beth Kirkpatrick taught
physical education and health for twenty years at Tilford Middle
School in Vinton, Iowa. During that time, she received national
recognition for her development of the physical education program
"Ultra Physical Education" that stresses Lifestyle Education and the
integration of technology for individualizing instruction and a
noncompetitive design for all team sports called the "Ultra Shuffle".
She has been recognized in LIFE Magazine, Newsweek, "Tom Broakaw's
NBC Nightly News", and CNN. Arnold Schwarzenegger's book "Arnolod's
Fitness for Kids", called her program ". . .what is widely thought of
as the foremost middle school physical education program in the
U.S.". She was awarded the Emens Distinguished Professorship at Ball
State University, Muncie, Indiana, in 1993. She is a former chair of
the Middle and Secondary School Physical Education Council for NASPE,
a past teacher of the year award winner for NASPE, a member of PE/TV
Board of Advisors, & is the current Director of Education and the
National Spokesperson for Polar Electro Inc. Beth received the Honor
Award and the Distinguished Service Award from the IAHPERd. She is
co-author of "Lessons From The Heart", and "The Ultra Shuffle" and
numerous articles. Beth Kirkpatrick has keynoted over 35 state AHPERD
Conventions, The European National AHPERD, the ICHPER-SD Conference
in Malaysia, and over 600 other conferences, conventions, and
workshops throughout the world. Beth is married to Glen Kirkpatrick
and they reside in Grundy Center, Iowa, with their two sons, Joshua
and Jason.
All You Ever Wanted To Know About Heart Rate
Monitors
Week 1 (July 9 - 14) - 2nd Hour (9:45 - 11:00)
This class will offer
full training to all participants on the functions, management,
operation and application of heart rate monitors in education, and
will be a "hands-on" experience using the technology. All
participants will have the use of a heart rate monitor 24 hours a day
throughout the week. Highlights of the book "Lessons From The Heart" written by the presenter will be covered
throughout the week. A Class Management Model will be demonstrated
showcasing the classroom distribution and storage of monitors, and a
Powerpoint presentation using an instructional format will provide
technology training for visual and hands-on learning.
The presenter is
considered the pioneer of heart rate monitor use in education, and
the first physical education teacher in the country to use heart rate
monitors with students in physical education classes as early as
1980. Beth Kirkpatrick has gathered over 15,000 heart rate print-outs
of her students at Tilford Middle School in Vinton, Iowa.
